First of all we didn't have any water in the rivers & streams until late December. Then of course when we got rain it flooded everything. Then by the time the waters had receded to a somewhat normal level it began to freeze.

Then by the time it froze enough to get on the ice we did not get on any great fish bites. Next thing was more rain again which started the cycle all over with a flood. Of course that has to run through a complete cycle again and so I ask myself, when will we get to fish?

Sure is much tougher than our boating season.

Until then, good friends, calm seas and tight lines, God Bless America!

Captain Art

http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Welcome 2010

Here we are - 2010 and what should we do about our charter fishing season this year? It may seem a little early to talk about a summer fishing charter but time flies. We will have our weekends booked in this next month. So what's our big news for this year? How about for starters no price increases during 2010!

That's correct, no price increases for 2010!

That may get someone a little interested to see what we have to offer in Ashtabula, Ohio. Lake Erie has certainly been dubbed walleye capital of the world. How about trying a fishing charter in Ashtabula, Ohio - home of legendary walleye catches!

The Ohio DNR has yet to post Lake Erie's fishing outlook. I have heard the lake still has an estimated 17+ million walleye. We should see the large schools in Ashtabula by mid June and our season should last through the end of September.

So although we are in the middle of January there is no better time than now to book your fishing trip early and get the dates you wish.

Visit us on the web at http://www.lake-erie-walleye-fishing-charters.com/ and put your face in this picture!

Until then, good friends, calm seas and great fishing - God bless America!

Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - finally some walleye!!!

Finally after a slow start for the year we are able to bring in some respectable walleye catches!! I guess the last few years have spoiled us again on Lake Erie with limit catches in short order being the rule rather than the exception. Not so for 2009.

We have had somewhat strange weather and conditions since ice-out on the big lake. I guess those were contributing factors to what has been going on with the walleye fishing.....very slow. Most days we had single digit catches with the good days into the teens. That was of course until last Tuesday (June 23rd) That was the day which was the turning point for the season in Ashtabula Ohio. Finally decent walleye numbers were within reasonable geographic reach of the harbor.

Over the last week we have had a few limit catches with other days of walleye numbers in the high teens or twenties. I hope the season will continue to be at least that good. We have some weekday dates available so if anyone is interested visit the web and give us a call.

Until then, good friends, calm seas and tight lines - God bless America

Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - I don't mind paying

I really don't mind paying for a job someone does for me............. as long as they do it right and charge me a fair price. Problem is, most of the time I have ever had someone do something for me I seem to have a problem with it. Inferior workmanship, trying to retire on it (overcharging) not as specked, or possibly gouging me on parts.

Come on.....I don't mind paying someones labor, but if parts are involved just charge me a fair market price. seems like many businesses not only wish to get their labor but if they make a call to send parts to them they think they're entitled to make more than the manufacturer did when selling it to them. Maybe I'm too particular, I don't know.

I was a maintenance supervisor for many years and dealt with projects ranging into the millions. I always tried to be fair when doing business with anyone. So, thought for the day if you're in business. Here is a bird I think we could do without. It steps once & shits three times! And being controlled by our government sure does not help things.

Some people may enjoy having a little pond of their own and seeing the geese visit. Soon afterwards they come to realize that this bird takes over and ruins everything. And the red tape you must go through to get rid of the damn things.

So I believe if you wish to see some of natures beauty while around water give us a visit at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com and we'll give you a gooseless first hand look of the beauty of Lake Erie.

In the meantime if you may be interested in Lake Erie fishing charters visit our new web at: http://www.lake-erie-walleye-fishing-charters.com

Until then, good friends, calm seas and great fishing........God Bless America, Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - toy time!!

It's that time of the year....spring is in the air, everyday seems a little closer to warmer weather and it's time to get our "toys" out of storage.

There is the boat, my wife's turbocharged new beetle, and the Harley. All stored at different locations! Sometimes I just second guess myself as why we do it & why we have them. Well I guess the answer is if we didn't enjoy it we wouldn't do it. I guess we do enjoy them. My wife enjoys her cars and I enjoy the boat and motorcycle.

So now it's opening our summer location and distributing those toys in their summer locations. Soon we will be using everything & the weather will be fine.

There have been good reports for our fishing this season on Lake Erie by the Ohio division of wildlife.......make a reservation, take a kid fishing!!

In the meantime if you may be interested in Lake Erie fishing charters visit our new web at:http://www.lake-erie-walleye-fishing-charters.com

Until then, good friends, calm seas and great fishing........God Bless America, Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - fisherman ethics disappearing?

Sing to the tune of "Oh where, oh where has my little dog gone":

Oh where, oh where has the ethical fisherman gone, oh where oh where can he be??????

I don't wish to say how old I'm getting to be but it's pretty old & I have been fishing for a long, long time. Having just finished our long steelhead trout season here in Northeastern Ohio I've come to realize we're loosing things which I was taught when I was a child - fishing ethics!

I can recall the days when as a child I would be all cranked up as we traveled to our favorite fishing spot on a certain lake. I would visualize how the fish may be biting and be so excited I could hardly wait for my dad to get us there. Then suddenly my excitement would lead to disappointment as we neared that favorite fishing spot only to find out someone had got there first.

What did we do?......croud the other group out....cast over their lines.....no! We simply went to another spot. This is one of the things about fishing which I was taught at a young age & passed on to my children. Simply put.....ethics! What is right & what is wrong, simple.

A vast majority of anglers out there should learn a little for themselves. I see a lack of morals so often during our steelhead trout season......miles of rivers & if you happen to be standing somewhere someone else seems they have to be there also. It even happens while fishing on the LUCKY STRIKE offshore in open water. I always took pride in listening to everyones requests. This could be from the smallest guy on the ladder to the CEO. I would listen to what they had to say and give them some response. I would always return phone calls. Even if it were to tell someone I wasn't interested.

Now it's the computer generation. It's surprising to me how many returns I get from peoples websites. What are the websites doing out there? I even created a blog recently to show our quest for link exchanges.

Why is it that when I ask questions to webmasters or owners that I only receive an answer back from less than 1% of the emails I send out? Is it that the web is filled with rude people? Even if the email did not get to the right place it would only be a mouse click for someone to forward it to whomever is in charge. Rude people - get off your butts & do some work, I am!

In the meantime if you may be interested in Lake Erie fishing charters and Lake Erie walleye fishing charters visit us on the web at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Until then, good friends, calm seas and great fishing........God Bless America, Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - saving bucks

A little bit more on saving bucks:

Today I had to revert back to an old ability of mine which I really didn't want to do: automobile mechanic. I have a Blazer which needed lower ball joints and with the price of fuel being what it is I chose not to let the local automotive shop do the work & did it myself.

Instead of doing just the lowers I chose to do the upper ball joints as well. Savings: about $400 big bucks. I'm sure everyone can find a better way of cutting corners than doing automotive work. Maybe you won't eat out as often......maybe you won't buy that new suit or major appliance you were looking at.

One thing is certain.......for the average person cutting costs somewhere to be able to put gasoline in your tank is a certainty. I'll still pray that God will bless America while our short sided politicians are running around with their heads stuck up their behinds.

With the cost of gasoline these days going through the roof where does the average Joe save enough bucks to make up for the increase?

For instance.....if your monthly automotive gasoline costs were $300 a few years ago they are now at least $900. My oh my, just where did our steelhead season go? It just seems like yesterday was October first and the beginning of our steelhead season. Six months have already passed. Today we had the banquet for the Grand River Bait & tackle trout tournament. The boat will be out of storage next week & soon will be ready for the water. The winter has held on this year and I feel our season is two weeks behind 2007. We will probably have two days of good trout fishing this coming week - tomorrow and Tuesday. From Wednesday on more rain with thunderstorms are predicted and will certainly muddy up the rivers again. It's really something how little good river time we have had since the end of January. It has either been frozen or muddy. But as always with the weather we can only take what we're given. Don't forget the youth trout derby at the Conneaut Fish & Game Club's pond, scheduled for May 17th. Bring your children for free gifts and refreshments and hopefully one of them will win the grand prize - a fishing charter on the "Lucky Strike"

In the meantime if you may be interested in Lake Erie fishing charters and Lake Erie walleye fishing charters visit us on the web at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Until then, good friends, calm seas and great fishing........God Bless America, Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - if we only knew why

Yesterday, for no apparent reason the steelhead trout began jumping out of the water and trying to swim upstream across a barrier which they could not make. I don't mean just a few. Hundreds of fish all seemingly over active. At the same time they became over-anxious on the bite and took every bait we threw after them.

I said to my friends who were fishing with me I wonder what triggers that. There were no apparent water or condition or barometer changes. I also said that if we could ever figure the fish out there would not be any more. The people would simply wipe them out!

Thats why its called fishing and I love it whichever way it comes. So if your interested in those guided stream trips for our wonderful steelhead trout make it soon as our season is winding down.

In the meantime if you may be interested in Lake Erie fishing charters and Lake Erie walleye fishing charters visit us on the web at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Until then, good friends, calm seas and great fishing........God Bless America, Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - quotes on first page of the paper

Well I managed to make first page of the local paper for some quotes about the Homeland security regulations & the laws effects on Lake Erie sport fisherman.

Enclosed is a copy from their article:

Published March 30, 2008 04:55 am - Local boaters will have to cross through a little red-tape when crossing over the Canadian border thanks to new anti-terrorism regulations handed down by the Department of Homeland Security.New regulations may cause stress for boaters traveling to CanadaAnti-terrorism regulations have been issued by the Department of Homeland SecurityBy STACY MILLBERG - Staff Writer - smillberg@starbeacon.com Star Beacon
Local boaters will have to cross through a little red-tape when crossing over the Canadian border thanks to new anti-terrorism regulations handed down by the Department of Homeland Security.
target="_top">

When this year’s boating season begins in the next few months, boaters entering Canada will now have to provide either a passport or two forms of identification, one that proves identification such as a driver’s license, and one proving citizenship such as a birth certificate. Boaters are also required to make a stop at a reporting station at the border.
Effective Jan. 31, the U.S. ended the practice of accepting oral declarations of citizenship at the borders. Local sailboaters, will be effected the most as it is normal practice to take excursions to Canada during the summer months.
Ashtabula Yacht Club and the Port Stanley Sailing Squadron in Canada, also host a sailboat race every year, the Lake Erie International.
Carl Anderson, one of the original founders of the race, said he carries his passport with him every time he travels to Canada, but for some people, the new regulations might be a big issue.
“Some people might get leery or scared with all the Homeland Security warnings,” he said.
Anderson said up until this year, boaters could get by with just presenting their driver’s license. Coordinators still plan on holding the Lake Erie International despite the new regulations, though, he said.
Tami Turner, a local sailor, said boaters from the county have always followed the guidelines for crossing the border. She doesn’t think the new regulations will deter many boaters from continuing to travel to Canada.
“I’ve always carried a passport with me even when it wasn’t necessary, just for added protection,” she said. “I don’t think it will make a difference.”
Turner said most Ashtabula County boaters already follow the new regulations.
“We’ve always called in to report we’re there and who is with us,” she said. “We don’t take that lightly. That’s an important thing. You’re going to a foreign country.”
Art Miller, who runs Lucky Strike Sport Fishing, local fishing charter service, said charter services in the county aren’t likely to be hurt by the new regulations because they don’t run a lot of charters to Canada.
“It’s just so difficult to do any charter services like that,” he said. “You have to jump through too many hoops and go through too much red tape.”
Miller said there is so much water here in the county, there isn’t much of a need for charter services to cross the international border. Charter services in the Western Basin of Lake Erie are more likely to be effected, he said.
Miller said he attended a charter captain’s conference at the beginning of March and a representative from the Department of Homeland Security was there discussing the new regulations.

Well how about that! With enough said.............in the meantime if you may be interested in Lake Erie fishing charters and Lake Erie walleye fishing charters visit us on the web at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com
Until then, good friends, calm seas and great fishing........God Bless America, Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day - the weather won't let us fish

Since the latter part of January we have had a small percentage of fishing time for steelhead trout on our Lake Erie tributaries. It is a rough time for the boating charter captains of the great lakes who only do the boating end of their fishing. I guide the streams and rivers until it's time to get the boat ready again. I have seen this many times within my friends, my own children who are now adults with children of their own, and of course my grandchildren. I never get tired of doing what I love to do and sharing the wealth of what I have learned with others.....especially if they are trying to help a child fish.

One excellent place to do this locally in the Northeast Ohio area is the Conneaut Fish & Game Club's 41st annual youth trout derby scheduled this year on May 19th, 2007. But I have had the dis-pleasure of some guides taking their customers who should have learned a little fishing etiquette before doing anything else.

When the fish are in the shallows they are very spooky. Yesterday evening I was fishing and this guide walked with his customer, upstream of me no more than 20 feet away. Needless to say the fish I were after were spooked and swam away. What is wrong with these people? Apparently they never developed any manners as they were growing up. My dad taught me many, many moons ago to give another fisherman room. This meant if I had headed to a favorite spot of mine and someone was already there I simply went somewhere else.

These guides leave a lot to be desired. I do things right & do them by the book and manage to do pretty well for customers as a river guide or boat captain.

So for you guides out there who do not know any better.......maybe you could do something other than fishing, ie: work in automotive or landscaping if you wish to visit the outdoors. We were fishing yesterday and had fish on all day long. The bad part is that most of them were suckers which had moved upstream in the muddy water. We caught at least 10 suckers to one steelhead trout.

I looked at my friend Shawn and said suckers are fish too! Both of us agreed that catching fish, no matter what kind was better than catching nothing at all. There is fishing & there is catching & both are fine with me.

Hopefully when you book a fishing trip with us you will experience both of them. A bad day on the water exceeds the best day of working.

Visit us on the web to see what is biting ....... http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

God bless America and her fishermen!!! Over the weekend I was in town for a funeral and certainly experienced it first hand again. A long time friend and fellow local charter captain who had just retired had a freak accident while looking at the roof on his house, fell, hit his head and died.

We spoke a week or so ago and since I had retired in 2006 we talked about doing so many things this year together that we both loved to do and now he is gone. It is very sad and so am I. He never had a chance to enjoy that retirement.

I enjoy every day I have and certainly thank God for everything in my life. I am one of those who is living that American dream and every day is special.

My advice if you wish to do anything: Do it now if you are capable of it because you may never get to see tomorrow.

God bless America and all of you and thank you for visiting us on the web at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Captain Art - Lucky Strike Sport fishing

Captain Art's thought for the day - expectations

When I was in industry I used to tell people to know their limitations. My wife & I donated a complete set (similar to hard cover encyclopedias) of fishing books. They cover everything from how to fish for nearly every game species to recipes on how to cook that catch. I had to laugh to myself because an inside joke for people who know me and ask me a question about how to do something my reply will be "read the book"

When I was younger that is just what I did......if I did not know how to do something I would read up on it and find out. Whether it be something mechanical, automotive, fishing, or whatever it may be, it did not matter. I would read, learn and succeed which developed into a well rounded knowledge base and helped in a good career.

Nowadays, with our computer generation, it is much more easier to have a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. Research, learn and develop your skills. Become well rounded and you will be the next resource which people flock to for answers they seek.

Therefore, the captains suggestion for the day has to be "read the book"

For those who may need to talk to the captain visit him on his web at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Calm seas, tight lines and smart answers....read the book......Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day

I'm really not certain of the origin but I heard long ago that bananas were bad luck on a boat. I know this old wives tale gets a lot of respect from the Hawaiian Island region as evidenced in much of their fishing charter advertising. I'm not superstitious but I just happened to pass this on to some fellow charter captains last week at the conference. Most of them had never heard this before.

Perhaps some stories long ago were told of vessels which had problems or even sank at sea and they just happened to have bananas as their cargo. Needless to say I don't want to stretch my luck as the fishing and fishing charters on Lake Erie have been good for me. So let me say just leave your bananas at home & bring meat in your lunches while charter fishing with us.

For more information on what you can bring aboard please contact the captain via his website at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Fair weather, tight lines, and no bananas allowed.............Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day

We've all heard the old fish story, "you should have been here yesterday." Well I was there yesterday (fishing through the ice in Conneaut Harbor, Ohio) and I did not get a hit. But I was told today by a friend that it was the place to be today. So I guess you should have been here today is more in order.

I did look for open water in Conneaut Creek today. It was difficult to get to as you had to climb over ice jams and through huge slush piles. But I was rewarded with a couple of steelhead trout and a few more missed hits.

Conditions were steadily improving while I was there but if the weather predictions for this weekend are correct no one will be able to fish any open water as it will be a raging river of ice flow again.

More from the captain and Lake Erie can be found on his Lake Erie fishing charter web at: http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Tight lines, good company & fair weather............Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day

Well, I didn't have a trip of any sort today so I went fishing through the ice in the harbor. I had to laugh to myself because this must only happen to me.......I fished for about three hours for trout through the ice in the harbor and never got a hit-nothing!

The reason I had to laugh to myself is that I was thinking about how fishermen get a reputation of being liars. This is because many of them never tell the truth. When was the last time you heard of a fisherman, and especially charter captain/fishing guide tell you that they never got even a hit while fishing?

But for anyone who knows fishing this is how it is.........it comes & goes........there are good days and there are bad but there are never bad fishing days!

Visit the captain for Lake Erie charter fishing information at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Tight lines, calm waters, good company..........Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day

Well Captains'........ have you heard about the new regulation and upcoming changes for your charter captains licenses? We had the Toledo Coast Guard at the conference last week. They encouraged anyone within 1 1/2 years of their Merchant Mariners license renewal to get their processes started asap.

Some REC's will be closing their licensing processes and many who went to certain places will in the near future have to go to a national center. One national center they told us about happened to be in WV!

Combine that with REC's taking our finger prints.......seems they do not trust police departments who took them before and the new Twic identity cards which will definately cost us more $$$.....it certainly doesn't get any easier. You can read more about the new Twic at:
www.tsa.gov/twic

If you'd like to speak to Captain Art to learn more about the regs you can visit him on his website at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com

Until then........tight lines and tighter wallets! If you happened to miss 2006 it was nothing short of spectacular fishing on the big lake.

If a fishing charter on Lake Erie may be in store for you during 2007 please visit the captain's website at http://www.LakeErieCaptain.com for more information.

Tight lines & fair weather........Captain Art

Captain Art's thought for the day

Well winter just does not want to let up. Temperatures dropped again along with some snow flurries. I took a ride yesterday & visited the Ashtabula River & Conneaut Creek.
